Why Is Jesus Called "The Lamb of God"?

Bible Reading: John 1:29 & 1 Peter 1:2

At Passover, each Jewish family sacrificed a lamb. The Sunday before Passover, the family purchased a lamb. Then the lamb lived with the family. When a boy turned 12, it

became his job to prepare the lamb for the Passover. He fed it and took care of it until it was time for the sacrifice.

When it came time for the sacrifice, the boy led the lamb, which loved him and willingly followed him, to the temple. The boy placed the lamb, which he’d become attached to, on the altar and killed it. The gentle, innocent lamb gave its life in the place of the boy and his family. The lamb took the punishment for the family’s sins.

That’s what Jesus did for us. 1 Peter 1:2 says, “God planned long ago to choose you and to make you his holy people, which is the Spirit's work. God wanted you to obey him and to be

made clean by the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ.” Like the Passover lamb, Jesus had done nothing wrong. But He loved us so much that He willingly accepted our punishment and died on the cross. Jesus, gentle and innocent as a lamb, chose to be sacrificed so that we could have eternal life in heaven.

Have you accepted his gift?

“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God. He takes away the sins of the world!” John 1:29

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for sacrificing Jesus in my place. Help me to show you my gratitude through my words and actions. In Jesus' name. Amen.
