What the Bible Teaches about Music & Musical Instruments

Bible Reading: Daniel 3:5

Daniel 3:5 lists a number of musical instruments. This verse reads, “As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music, you must fall

down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.” You might never have heard of some of these instruments.

While music and musical instruments play a part in worshipping God, not all instruments were accepted at all times as being appropriate in worship. At one time, even the organ was taboo in many churches!

Music and musical instruments do enhance our worship of God. They help draw our attention toward God and His magnificence and give us another way to thank, praise, and adore God.

Sometimes, however, musical instruments are used for less than godly purposes, as in today’s verse. These instruments were used to enhance the worship of a statue.

The Bible doesn’t come out and say one kind of music or instrument is good and another kind is bad. However, the Bible does say that God should be the most important person in our lives and everything we do should be done to show our love and respect for God, demonstrate our devotion to God, and to honor God and His Name. The Bible also says that we are to love others.

Does your choice of music honor God above all else? Does it show love toward others?

“In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.” 2 Timothy 2:20 & 21

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to cleanse anything impure or ignoble from my life and to honor You in all I do, even through the music I choose to listen to. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
