Well of Salvation

Bible Reading: Isaiah 12:3

After a long, hot journey, the people of Jesus’ day looked forward to coming to a well on the edge of a town. Wells of that day were often a simple hole or pit dug in the

ground. Sometimes they had steps that led down to the water. Other wells had a low stone wall built around them to keep dirt from being kicked into the water. Wells were considered to be landmarks and were regularly used as meeting places.

Travelers and townspeople alike looked forward to satisfying sensation of drinking a cup of cool water. That water saved them from the discomfort of thirst and from the ultimate consequence of going without water -- death. It also gave them pleasure; they enjoyed a refreshing drink of water. That’s why the words of Isaiah in Isaiah 12:3 had such strong meaning for them. This verse says, “With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.”

The salvation that God offers to all of us is like the water in those wells. God’s salvation saves us from the discomfort of sin and it saves us from the ultimate consequence of going without God’s salvation – eternal death. When we take a drink from God’s “well of salvation”, we get great satisfaction and pleasure and we give God satisfaction and pleasure as well.

Are you thirsty for the permanent refreshment that only God can offer? Take a drink from the “well of salvation” today. Ask Jesus to be your Savior right now.

“…but whoever drinks the water I [Jesus] give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:14

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I want to drink from the well of salvation. Forgive my sins and quench my thirst for eternal life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
