Wednesday at the Well: Proverbs 24:1 - How to Know When a Friend Is No Longer a Friend

Bible Verses to Explore: Proverbs 24:1

Proverbs 24:1 says, "Do not envy wicked men, do not desire their company." This verse is warning us to be careful when we choose our friends.

How can you know when it’s no longer a good idea to hang with someone? How can you tell when your “friend” has stopped building you up and is beginning to tear you down?

Does that person ignore wise advice?

Does that person encourage you to ignore wise advice, too?

Does that person often act without considering the consequences of his actions?

Does that person spend time in risky situations and want you to spend time there, too?

Does that person seek to satisfy every bodily urge?

Has that person refused to believe in God?

Has that person closed his mind to the truth about Jesus?

Is that person a self-serving, “me first” person?

Is that person loud and mouthy, not considering the affect his words have on other people?

If you answered, “yes” to any of these questions, it may be time to lose a friend.

If Jesus were with you, would you want to spend time with Jesus and that person at the same time?

If you answered, “no” to this last question, it is definitely time to lose a friend.

"Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared." Proverbs 22:24 & 25

Prayer: Heavenly Father, give me wisdom to choose good friends and to know when to lose bad ones. In Jesus' name. Amen.
