Wednesday at the Well: Proverbs 16:25 - Should I?

Bible Reading: Proverbs 16:25

Do you have a hard decision to make? Are you having trouble deciding whether or not to do something?

Proverbs 16:25 tells us, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.” In other words, we need to think carefully before we make decisions. Just because something “seems right” doesn’t make it the best choice nor does it make it God’s will for our lives.

Here are four tips to help you ensure that the choices you make are in line with God’s plan for your life.

First, rather than looking for Bible verses that specifically say something is wrong, look for passages that tell you if that thing is definitely good. If you can’t say with confidence that God definitely approves of what you are considering, it is wiser not to do it.

Second, don’t do anything that you can’t ask God to bless. In other words, if you don’t believe that God would be so pleased with what you are doing that he would say

that he is proud of you and cause your endeavor to succeed, don’t do it.

Third, when in doubt, don’t. Never do anything that you are unsure of. You can always do that thing later when you are sure it is the right choice. You can’t undo an inappropriate act once it is done, however.

Finally, trust God and His Holy Spirit’s guidance. In Psalm 32:8 God says,

“I [the Lord] will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.” We can depend on God to keep His promise to teach, guide, and direct us. He will provide perfect direction every time we ask Him, “Should I…or shouldn’t I?”

Let’s pray together.

Heavenly Father, remind us to seek Your wisdom, in Your word and in prayer, each time we have a decision to make. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
