Bible Verses to Explore: Philippians 2:1-4
Imagine that you just learned your friend’s grandfather died or that your friend’s mom has cancer or that your best friend just called and said her boyfriend dumped her. What
do you say? What can you say?
Sometimes there aren’t any “right words.” However, that doesn’t mean we should do or say nothing when those we love are hurting. Verse 1 of today’s Bible reading says, “If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.” That means that just as God loves, comforts, and encourages us, we should love, comfort, and encourage one another. Even when
words fail us, there are ways to show our love and offer comfort, encouragement, and hope to the hurting.
Here are a few things that you might try:
* Encourage your friend to go to God through prayer and Bible reading for strength and love.
* Hug your friend.
* Pray with your friend.
* Pray for your friend.
* Share a verse or two that genuinely encourages you during difficult times.
* Offer to help your friend by doing something specific (getting groceries, cooking a meal, even just making a cup of tea.)
* Listen if your friends want to talk.
Sometimes there really is nothing you can do or say that will help. Sometimes all you can do is be there.
Remember, the most important point as stated in Philippians 2:4 – “Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” If we put our loved ones needs ahead of our own, and they do the same for us, everyone will be loved and cared for in the way that most pleases and glorifies God.
Let’s pray. Heavenly Father, my friend needs you. Please be there for her and help me to be there for her, too. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
