Wednesday at the Well: Muzzle Your Mouth - Psalm 39:1

Bible Verses to Explore: Psalm 39:1

In Psalm 39:1 David wrote, “I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my present.” David knew it was important

to be careful about what he said.

Keeping tight reins on your mouth is important. God expects you to be control what you say all of the time. He expects you to use polite words and “Christian” phrases when you are with other Christians.

God also expects you to use kind words in the presence of those who haven’t accepted Jesus. Why is it important to be careful how we speak around our unsaved friends and family?

What we say will have an influence on them. Our words will either draw them close to

Jesus Christ or our words will push them away from Jesus.

Are you using kind, “Christian” words all of the time or only for show to make your Christian friends think you are a good Christian? Do you use words around your unsaved friends that displease God just so you can fit in? Are you keeping your mouth muzzled or are you giving it free rein?

A final thought…Remember the advise of Proverbs 21:23: “He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.”

Let’s pray. Heavenly Father, help us pull in the reins on our mouths so we will only speak words that honor You and build up and encourage each other. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
