Bible Verses to Explore: Luke 4:18 & 19
So far, we have examined what Jesus thought about His Father, His disciples, His enemies, and His family. Today, we will explore what Jesus thought about the job God
gave Him to do here on earth.
In today’s Bible reading Jesus said, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then, in John 4:34 & 35 Jesus said, “My food, is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.“ This passages tell us a lot about what Jesus thought about His mission. Jesus believed His mission was to spread the gospel, to bring healing, and to bring reconciliation with
God.
At other points, Jesus made statements that gave a bit more detail on how he viewed His mission. In Matthew 5:17 & 18 Jesus said He came to earth to fulfill the law of God. In Matthew 9:13 He said He came to call sinners to repentance. In Luke 24:45-49 Jesus said He came to suffer, die, and be raised from the dead in order to give us forgiveness for our sins and in John 3:16 Jesus said His mission was to save us from sin and to give us eternal life.
In John 4:34 & 35 Jesus stated that He believed His mission was to do the will of God, which included all of Jesus’ other statements about His mission.
Like Jesus, we have a God-given mission. According to Ecclesiastes 12:13, that mission is to “Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole [duty] of man.”
