Bible Verses to Explore: John 17:20-26
Today is the final day in our series on Jesus’ thoughts. We’ve considered what Jesus thought about His Father, His disciples, His enemies, His family, and the job God
gave Him to do here on earth. Our last topic is what Jesus thinks about us.
John 17 is the final recorded prayer of Jesus. Jesus prayed this prayer just before His arrest and crucifixion. In verses 20-26 of this prayer Jesus talked to His Father about us. Jesus’ words tell us that He loves us, that He cares about us, and that He was concerned about our relationships with Him and with each other.
Jesus wasn’t satisfied to sit in heaven and observe us, His creations. Instead, Jesus chose to come to earth, to live, and to die so we could be with Him in heaven for all
eternity. In verses 22-24 of our Bible reading Jesus prayed, “I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.” It was very, very important to Jesus that we be with Him and share His glory with Him. It was so important that He gave up everything to make that happen.
I hope you will acknowledge Jesus’ love and desire to have you with Him in heaven. Admit to Him that you’ve sinned and let Him down. Ask Him to forgive you. When you do, You will be able to receive the eternal life, glory, and perfect unity with God that Jesus wants you to have.
Let’s pray together. Heavenly Father, we are amazed that Jesus thought so much about us that He was willing to die to make a way for us to be with Him. Thank You for that eternal-life-giving gift! Please help us to learn to think in the same selfless, loving, God-fearing way that Jesus thought. Thank You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
