Bible Verses to Explore: James 3:2-12
I try to be very careful of the things I say. Why? I want God to be proud of me. I want to be able to say, “You [God] were with me all night and looked deep into my heart. You
questioned me and found that I did not say or do anything wrong,” like David in Psalm 17:3.
There are four things that help me control the words I say. What are they?
1. I wait. While I wait, I ask God to help me say or sign the right words.
2. I listen. Listening carefully helps me to understand the conversation and choose the right words.
3. I think. Thinking before I talk helps me to avoid saying things that might hurt or embarrass anyone (including me).
4. I choose my words carefully. I use words that I understand. I don’t try to impress people with my words. Why? I want my words to be wise, helpful, and kind.
James says in verse 5, “[Our] tongue…is a small part of the body, but it can boast about doing great things.” Those “great things” can be good or bad. Also, Proverbs 21:23 says, “People who are careful about what they say will save themselves from trouble.”
I hope the “great things” your tongue boasts about are good. If we remember to boast only in Jesus, we will be much further ahead in using the right kinds of words.
Let’s pray together. Heavenly Father, help us to always be careful of the words we use. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
