Wednesday at the Well: James 1:26 - Bruises

Bible Verses to Explore: James 1:26

Remember the last time you stubbed your toe? The pain lingered long after the bump. If you banged it hard enough, the toe may have been bruised and tender for

days, even if there was no visible sign of an injury.

Careless or hurtful words can cause a similar pain in the heart of a friend. James 1:26 says, “Remember to use the gift you have, which was given to you through a prophecy when the group of elders laid their hands on you.” You and I might think we are a very religious people. But if you and I don’t control our tongues, we are fooling ourselves. Our careless talk makes our offerings and service to God worthless.

We may not see any outward signs of hurt, but the thoughtless words we speak may leave a tender spot in our friend’s hearts that could last for a long time.

Time will heal a bruised toe.

A sincere apology can start the healing process for a bruised heart.

Have you bruised a friend’s heart by stubbing it with careless words?

Please, apologize today. Help your friend’s heart begin to heal.

“The Scriptures say, ‘If you want to enjoy true life and have only good days, then avoid saying anything hurtful, and never let a lie come out of your mouth.’“ 1 Peter 3:10

Let’s pray. Heavenly Father, forgive our careless words. Help those heard those words to forgive us, too. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
