Wednesday at the Well: Acts 17:11-12 - Check Out What You Hear

Bible Verses to Explore: Acts 17:11-12

Paul was a fabulous missionary preacher. He was careful to present only the truth. Even so, the Bereans took the time to examine the scriptures for themselves to be certain

that what Paul was telling them was truly God’s message. Paul commended them for that in Acts 17:11 saying, “Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.”

God expects us to check out what we hear, even in church (or on this blog!). Even though our ministers and Sunday school teachers are earnestly trying to teach us God’s word, it is our responsibility to follow up on what we hear. We need to write down what they say and what scriptures

they refer to. Then we need to go look them up for ourselves. We need to be sure they have taught us God’s truth. Even the best teachers are human and can make mistakes.

My challenge to you is to do just that with each devotion you read here at PH121: Today, Tomorrow, & Forever!

Don’t hand over the responsibility for your spiritual growth to a minister, Sunday school teacher or to anyone else. Take charge of your spiritual growth by examining the scriptures to be sure that everything you are taught is truly God’s Word. Remember, ultimately, you are accountable to God, so as Paul said to Timothy, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).

Let’s pray. Heavenly Father, help us examine your Word, learn well what it teaches, and live it faithfully every day. Help us know The Truth – Jesus -- intimately. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Thanks for stopping by! Please download the free Inductive Study Guide and use it as you examine God’s word each day on your own.

God bless!
