Bible Verses to Explore: Acts 15:36-40
Paul and Barnabas were good friends. They worked together to tell people about Jesus. Then, one day, they had a disagreement. Barnabas wanted to take John Mark with them
on a mission trip. Paul disagreed. Verse 39 of our Bible reading says, “Paul and Barnabas had a big argument about this. It was so bad that they separated and went different ways. Barnabas sailed to Cyprus and took Mark with him.”
We all disagree with people. How can we end disagreements before they end our friendships?
The Bible gives us the answer.
First, work hard to see the other person’s point of view (Philippians 2:3, 4). Try to understand what your friend is thinking and feeling.
Second, look for ways to compromise (Matthew 5:25, 26). Be creative. Talk to your friend. Work together. Don’t become angry. Remember the words of Ephesians 4:26 – “When you are angry, don’t let that anger make you sin, and don’t stay angry all day.” Don’t give up or run away. Most problems have solutions.
Third, follow the advice of Paul in Philippians 2:3 & 4 – “In whatever you do, don’t let selfishness or pride be your guide. Be humble, and honor others more than yourselves. Don’t be interested only in your own life, but care about the lives of others too.”
Resolving differences and settling disagreements takes work, but your friend is worth the effort!
Let’s pray. Heavenly Father, help us to have open minds. Help us to work with people, not against them. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
