Bible Verses to Explore: 1 Corinthians 15:58
What do you have to do today that you’d really don’t want to do?
Go to work or school?
Tell someone some bad news?
Visit a grouchy neighbor to ask them to church?
Tell someone you’re sorry and ask for their forgiveness?
Thank God for that activity.
Doing things that we don’t want to do but that we know God expects us to do builds character. Today’s Bible verse, 1 Corinthians 15:58, tells us that we should “Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord.” Why? That verse goes on to explain, “You know that your work in the Lord is never wasted.”
Doing things we don’t want to do teach us self-control. They help us to learn to be diligent and stick to a tough job. They strengthen our will to finish the things that we start. Sticking to those tasks helps us learn to be content and satisfied with the life God has given us. They even teach us to have a cheerful attitude. We learn to smile and persevere with a good attitude.
You could skip the unpleasant task that you are facing, but -- will sitting on the couch help you grow into the person God wants you to be? Instead, why not do as the writer of Hebrews 10:36 urges you to do and“… persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”
Let’s pray together. Heavenly Father, thank You for any unpleasant tasks that we are facing. We may not enjoy them, but we understand that You are using them to teach us to be more like Jesus. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
