Bible Reading: Isaiah 41:29
Isaiah 41:29 says, “Behold, they are all vanity; their works are nothing: their molten images are wind and confusion” (KJV).
If we look at this verse in a variety of translations, we learn what vanity means. The New King James translates vanity as, “worthless”. The New International Version says, “false… amounts to nothing”. Other versions say, “foolish, worthless things” (New Living Translation), and “delusion” (Revised Standard Version).
What things have you placed before God that are, in reality, “vanity”?
* Your looks?
* Your hobbies?
* Your belongings?
* Your pets?
* Your education?
* Your comfort?
* Your wealth?
* Sports?
* Music?
* TV?
* Movies?
These things, and others like them, are useful and make our lives fuller and more interesting. However, to place so much importance on any “thing” that we neglect God and our relationship to Him, is vanity.
“Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.” Psalm 119:37
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I realize that Solomon was right. Without You in my life, “everything is meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 1:2; emphasis added). Thank You for giving my life meaning. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
