Using God's Possessions

Bible Reading: Psalm 24:1

God wants us to share what we have with others, but He also wants us to be responsible for and take good care of our possessions. After all, they are really God’s

possessions. He’s just given them to us to look after for Him.

How are we to respond when someone who we know to be irresponsible or destructive wants to borrow one of the possessions that God has entrusted to us? How would God react?

In Leviticus 18, 25, and 26, we read some of God’s instructions to the Israelites concerning their behavior in the Promised Land. God told the Israelites that if they didn’t obey God and follow His instructions, He would take the land away from them just as He had taken it away from those who he’d given it to before.

The previous owners had misused the land and possessions that God had given to them to worship false gods or to make into false gods to worship so God took away what He had given them.

Therefore, it’s important to remember the words of the psalmist in Psalm 24:1 which says, “The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” Simply put, everything on earth belongs to God. Nothing truly belongs to us.

Since the possessions of others (as well as our own possessions) are really God’s possessions, using those items is a privilege, not a right. Irresponsibility and destructiveness can cause us to give up that privilege.

“Everything belongs to God, and all things were created by his power. So God did the right thing when he made Jesus perfect by suffering, as Jesus led many of God’s children to be saved and to share in his glory.” Hebrews 2:10 CEV

Prayer: Heavenly Father, give me the wisdom to know when to share and when enough is enough. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
