Bible Reading: Matthew 18:21, 22
In Matthew 18:21 and 22 we read this conversation: “Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to
seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’”
At first blush, it might seem as if it would be easy for Jesus to say forgive, forgive, and forgive again. After all, Jesus was (and is) God and God can do anything.
However, while Jesus lived on earth, He was also a human man. He was picked on, called names, and bullied just like we are. Jesus was faced with the same choice that we face – forgive or become bitter.
When Jesus told his disciples (and us) to forgive a person as many times as that person asked for forgiveness, he knew just how hard it is to forgive.
Jesus’ willingness to “practice what He preached” was put to the test as He was beaten, bullied, and nailed to the cross. He passed that test when he uttered the words, “Father, forgive them.” Jesus forgave those who hurt Him and He asked God, His Father, to forgive them as well.
Each time someone asks you to forgive him or her, your willingness to obey Jesus’ command to forgive is tested.
How’s the test going? Are you passing?
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32
Prayer: Heavenly Father, give me the integrity I need to obey You and forgive everyone, even my persecutors. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
