Bible Reading: Job 13:5
In today’s Bible verse Job said, “If only you would be altogether silent! For you, that would be wisdom.”
Job had the right idea. Speaking our minds – telling it like it is – isn’t always wise or helpful. Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing.
Job’s friends thought they had all the answers. Their hearts were in the right place. They only wanted to help Job. They wanted to be sure that Job was right with God.
However, their “wise words” weren’t very wise nor were they helpful or encouraging.
While we have the right to speak our minds, we also have the responsibility to speak in love. It is up to each one of us to decide if we will use our right to speak our minds or consciously choose to keep our words to ourselves so as not to hurt another person’s feelings or risk pushing someone away from Christ.
The next time you are tempted to speak your mind, take a moment to decide which is wiser: saying your piece or remaining “altogether silent.”
“A prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself, but the heart of fools blurts out folly.” Proverbs 12:23
Prayer: Heavenly Father, give me the wisdom to know when silence is the “word of the day.” In Jesus’ name. Amen.
