Shield of Faith

Bible Reading: Ephesians 6:16

In Bible times, it was common for a soldier’s shield to be made of wood and covered with leather. Enemies often shot flaming darts. They also shot darts tipped in poison

that caused flesh to burn.

For a soldier’s shield to be effective in fending off these darts, he had to keep it moving. The shield was then able to ward off darts from any direction.

Ephesians 6:16 talks about another shield saying, “In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” Faith in Jesus is our spiritual shield. Satan, our evil enemy, is continually attacking us with “darts” – sinful temptations – that could poison our lives and burn up our testimony for Christ.

We must be alert and watching for Satan’s attacks from all directions if we want to protect our life and testimony from Satan’s fiery, poisonous attacks. We must keep our faith in Christ active by knowing God’s word, putting it into daily practice in our lives, and continually depending upon Christ’s saving grace.

“The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song.” Psalm 28:7

Prayer: Heavenly Father, keep me alert against Satan’s fiery darts. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
