Bible Reading: Exodus 18:14
Moses’ father-in-law came to visit. He watch as Moses ran from one thing to another, trying to make all of the necessary decisions himself. Exodus 18:14 tells us that “When
his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, ‘What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?’”
Moses’ had himself over-committed. He had too many responsibilities. The work that needed to be done was too much for one person. However, it took another person to make Moses see his over-commitment. Only after Moses’ father-in-law pointed out to Moses that he was spread too thin was Moses willing to do something about it. Moses took his father-in-law’s advice and delegated some of the responsibilities to other reliable men.
It’s not always easy to trust other people to do a job right (or to do it the way we think it should be done). However, it is sometimes necessary to be willing let go of a job and trust others to do it. Jesus’ demonstrated this in His ministry here on earth. Jesus trusted His disciples to help spread God’s message. He didn’t carry the burden of the whole job alone. His disciples shared His load.
Are you keeping your life balanced between work and leisure or are you over-committed? Be honest with yourself. If you are spread too thin, it’s time to evaluate your priorities, eliminate activities, and delegate tasks. Don’t let arrogant pride keep you from living the balanced, enjoyable life that God wants you to live. Share your load with others and help others carry their loads as well.
“Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.: Galatians 6:2
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to help others and to allow others to help me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
