Bible Reading: Matthew 5:3
In the first part of this two-part series, we talked about living in spiritual poverty. Spiritual poverty isn’t the same as being poor in spirit.
God doesn’t want anyone to live in spiritual poverty – living without Christ. God took great pains to prevent people from living in spiritual poverty by sending His “one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
However, God does want each and every person on earth to be poor in spirit. Poor in spirit means that we recognize that we can never live the perfect, sinless life that God requires. Being poor in spirit means that we acknowledge that we are living in spiritual poverty. It means that we understand that we need Jesus to forgive us, to save us, and to fill us with His Holy Spirit so we can experience the the richness of Christ and live the abundant life that we can only have by welcoming Him into our hearts, souls, and lives.
When we are poor in spirit and choose to accept Christ and His riches, God takes us out of our spiritual poverty and gives us the riches of Christ – the kingdom of heaven – just as it says in Matthew 5:3, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
I pray that every person on earth would become poor in spirit and give up spiritual poverty in order to become rich in Christ!
“Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?” James 2:5
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the riches that I have in Christ. I pray that everyone would become poor in spirit and give up spiritual poverty so they will all be rich in Christ, too. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
