Ransomed!

Bible Reading: Mark 10:45

When a person is kidnapped, the kidnappers demand a ransom for their release. The person is a prisoner of the kidnappers. He or she is under the kidnappers’ control

and can’t do anything of his or her own free will. The kidnappers have no right to hold the person whom they have kidnapped, yet the family of the kidnapped person has to pay to have him or her released. In essence, the family has to buy the kidnapped person’s freedom from the kidnappers.

When Adam gave in to the temptation to eat the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, we were “kidnapped” by sin. Sin holds us prisoner. Every thing we do, say, or think is dictated by sin. Sin controls us.

However, sin has no legitimate right to us. We belong to God because He created us to be a part of His family. Even so, in order to free us from the imprisonment of sin, God had to pay a ransom for us. He had to buy our freedom from sin. To do that, God sent Jesus to be the ransom for us. Jesus’ death on the cross paid for our freedom. That’s what we read in Mark 10:45 which says, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Jesus’ resurrection broke sin’s control over us. As a result, we can go home to God.

“For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men—the testimony given in its proper time.” 1 Timothy 2:5 & 6
