When you have a cut and you cover it with a bandage, does the cut immediately go away?
No, a bandage simply hides the cut from view. The cut is still there.
When you rub Anbesol on sore gums, is the source of the pain eliminated?
No, the area is only temporarily numbed. When the medication wears off, the pain will return.
Using things like drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, sex or food to deal with the emotional aches and pains of your life works the same way. Those things may temporarily hide the hurt or numb the pain, but all too soon, the emotional “cuts” in your life will make their presence felt again.
Only God can bring permanent – eternal – relief to the pain of life’s struggles and heartaches. In Revelation 21:4 God promises that when those who give their lives to Jesus arrive in heaven, “There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
