Not So Harmless Things

Bible Reading: Malachi 3:5-6a & Acts 19:13-20

Palm reading, taro cards, horoscopes, psychic hot lines, and other “future telling” activities may seem like “harmless fun”, but, in reality, they are a dangerous threat to

your spiritual health.

When someone looks to a one of these “future telling” activities for a glimpse of the future, he or she gives that activity a power that it doesn’t have. What begins as an innocent curiosity or a way to have more control over one’s life can become an addiction. Gradually, the seeking person’s confidence in his or her own ability to make decisions to lessen. His or her willingness and ability to trust in God to help him or her make decisions is diminished.

Eventually, the “future telling” activity controls the person. He or she becomes unable or unwilling to make a decision without first “consulting the cards” or “reading his/her horoscope”. Ultimately, the activity takes God’s place in the person’s life. Thus, God takes a very dim view of these behaviors. For example, in Malachi 3:5-6a God says, “So I will come near to you for judgment. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers…but do not fear me," says the LORD Almighty. I the LORD do not change.”

I hope you and are aren’t risking our lives for “fun” isn’t so harmless.

Instead, let’s follow the example of those in the early church (Acts 19) and purge these things from our lives.

“A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.” Acts 19:19

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I want real power and wisdom behind my decisions. I want You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
