Bible Reading: Proverbs 22:1
Several times in the Bible we read of incidents when God told a mother- or father-to-be to name their child a specific name. Periodically, God changed the name of a person.
The Bible also contains several genealogical lists showing the ancestors of a given person. When we receive Christ as our Savior, God gives us a new name.
So, what’s with all the names? Why are names so important to God?
Names identify an individual. Names oftentimes show how one person is related to another person. Many times names describe what a person is like.
The many names of Jesus do all of those things. The Bible contains more than 190 different names for Jesus. Watch for them as you read. Make a list of some of them then spend some time thinking about some of these names.
* Read the verses that contain them.
* Think about each name in order to discover what it tells you about Jesus.
* Call Jesus by some of these names as you pray.
* Use the meaning of some of Jesus’ names to guide you with your thanksgiving, praise, and requests when you pray.
Also, Proverbs 22:1 tells us that “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” It’s important not to do anything than could spoil the reputation of our name or dishonor God’s name.
One more thing...As important as our names are now, someday, God will give each of us a new name, a name specifically chosen for us by God, Himself. What a special gift!
All names are important and worthy of respect, the name of Jesus most of all!
“You will be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will bestow.” Isaiah 62:2b
Prayer: Heavenly Father, You truly are “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6) and so much more! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
