Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 12:12, 13
When the Israelites begged God for a king, (they wanted to be like everybody else and have a human king instead of letting God continue to be their King), God said they
could choose one. They chose Saul. Samuel spoke to the Israelites saying, “But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we want a king to rule over us – even though the LORD your God was your king. Now here is the king you have chosen, the one you asked for; see, the LORD has set a king over you.” With that, Saul became the first king of Israel.
Saul was exactly like the king that they Israelites had pictured in their minds – tall, dark, and handsome. However, Saul’s good looks couldn’t make up for his character flaws. Saul’s heart wasn’t passionate about leading his people in serving God. His over-inflated ego ended his kingdom.
When God gave Israel a replacement king, God chose David. David was a small young man, not at all “kingly” on the outside, but on the inside…On the inside, David loved God. David was a man God could depend on to lead the Israelites in serving and obeying God.
Whose standard are you using to choose friends, dates, and potential marriage partners – the Israelites, or God’s?
“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18
Prayer: Heavenly Father, guide my choices of friends. I want to surround myself with people who sincerely love You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
