Hemmed In

Bible Reading: Genesis 28:16

Jacob had been sleeping. “When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, ‘Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it’” (Genesis 28:16).

Jacob had a vision of angels ascending and descending a ladder into heaven. The Lord, Himself, stood at the top of the ladder. When Jacob woke from his dream, he very clearly sensed God’s presence in that place with him.

Sometimes God makes His presence in our lives very clearly known. Perhaps you received a gift of the exact amount you needed to go to camp or you “accidentally” came across the perfect verse to encourage you when you’re hurting.

Sometimes, God’s presence is less noticeable. In fact, He is sometimes so still and so quiet that we begin to wonder if He is still with us at all.

Psalm 139:5 says, “You hem me in--behind and before…” Picture yourself wrapped in a circle of velvet, with God as the stitches that hold you securely wrapped in His tender love.

The next few verses go on to assure us that wherever we go on heaven or earth God will always be there. Even the darkness can’t separate God from us!

God wants you to know that even if you don’t “feel” Him, He is always with you.

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” 2 Corinthians 4:7-9

Prayer: Heavenly Father, it’s so comforting to know that Your love always surrounds me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
