Have a Heart Like the Widow's

Bible Reading: 1 Kings 17:7-16

In 1 Kings 17 12 we read about a lady who is a wonderful role model of consideration. Although her food supply was limited to just enough flour to bake only one small

portion of bread, she willingly gave away that portion of bread to Elijah and her son. She put their needs ahead of her own. Only after they were fed, did she, herself, eat. In verse 12 of this passage this widow woman said, “As surely as the LORD your God lives I don't have any bread-only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. Yet, she used that small amount of food to feed God’s prophet, Elijah, first, just as he had commanded her to do. According to verse 15, “She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family.”

God blessed her selfless consideration of others. He miraculously refilled her flour and oil jars so that every day, while the famine in her country lasted, there was enough flour and oil to provide bread for Elijah, the widow’s family, and the widow.

Do you trust God enough to show selfless consideration to others, even in hard times?

“The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.” Psalm 23:1

Prayer: Heavenly Father, give me a heart like the widow’s heart. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
