Good Things & God's Things

Bible Reading: Colossians 4:5 NLT

What do you enjoy doing? Painting? Listening to music? Taking long walks? Playing computer games? Surfing the Internet?

We all have special interests and hobbies – and that’s good. God wants us to enjoy the “good things” that life has to offer. In fact, He made each one of us to enjoy the things we like.

Try the following experiment:

First, make a list of your favorite things to do.

Second, add to your list praying, Bible reading, praise and worship, helping others, serving in church, mission work at home or abroad, encouraging your pastor, teachers, and other Christians and Christian workers.

Next, number the items on your list in order according to how much time you spend doing each item, with #1 being the activity on which you spend the most time.

Finally, sit back and take a good look at your results. Are you so busy doing “good things” that you’ve pushed “God’s things” aside?

I hope that each one of us will heed Paul’s admonition in today’s Bible reading and “Live wisely among those who are not Christians, and make the most of every opportunity.”

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to keep the important things important. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
