Bible Reading: Psalm 116:2
Kids love action figures. Action figures are small dolls that are supposed to do things. They are active a characters. These toys allow kids to use their imaginations and create
stories to act out with the toys.
Christians are to be active, too. One of the gifts that God has given us is a gift that requires that we actively communicate with God. That gift is the gift of prayer. Prayer is how we talk to God and one way God talks to us.
Psalm 116:2 says, “Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.” This verse, written by King David, a man after God’s own heart, gives proof that it is acceptable to be firm in our prayers. It is all right to be specific and to speak to God exactly what we feel and need.
Take note of the action verbs in this verse:
“Answer” “Give” “Hear”
Yes, politeness and respect for God is needed and important in our prayers, but David’s words make it clear that our prayers can be polite and respectful and at the same time firm, honest, genuine, passionate, and active. We are to have an active prayer life that seeks God’s active participation in our lives as well as our active participation in God’s plan.
How can we use prayer to actively participate in God’s plan?
Worship and praise God in our prayers. God will help us grow us spiritually as we pray. God’s will – His plan for our lives – is often revealed while we pray. When we pray, we reach out to God and God to comes near to us. Praying for other people shows them that we love them and care about them. Again, notice all of the action involved in prayer!
Yes, prayer is God’s gift to us, a gift that requires us to be actively pray “action-packed” prayers throughout our lifetimes.
“Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; Be gracious to me and hear my prayer.” – Psalm 4:1
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of prayer. Help me to actively use it throughout all my life and never forget to call our to You. In Jesus' name. Amen.
