Bible Reading: Ecclesiastes 2:10 & 11
Do you have more stuff than you know what to do with? Would you like things to have less power over your life? Would you like to feel more content with what you have and
be less tempted to constantly be looking for something else to buy?
Solomon certainly had more possessions than he needed. He did an experiment to see what, if anything, would give the most meaning to life and be the most fulfilling. In Ecclesiastes 2:10 & 11 Solomon summarized his experiment saying, “I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.”
The continual desire to buy more and more things is an attempt to fill the hole in your heart that only Jesus can fill. God’s word doesn’t just tellus to be content, it gives us some ideas of how to fill that hole in our lives that things can never really fill.
Instead of trying to fill your heart with things, fill your heart with the Spirit (Romans 15:13). Fill your mind with the Word (Psalm 139:17). Fill your hands with acts of love and service to others (James 2:17-19). Fill your mouth with words that share the message of God’s love and salvation and offer encouragement to others (Psalm 19:14). Find the purpose and meaning for your life in Jesus alone.
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33
Prayer: Heavenly Father, fill my life with the presence of Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
