Don't Rationalize

Bible Reading: Isaiah 5:21 & Matthew 19:17b

We’ve been told over and over how important it is to pray and ask God for wisdom. Thinking that we are wise enough to make decisions without God’s input or direction is

foolish. That’s the point of Isaiah 5:21 – “Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.”

However, there are times when we don’t need to ask God for direction. There are actually times when it would be wrong to ask God’s opinion.

Whenever God has given us a clear command, He ahs already made His position on something perfectly clear – such as no sex outside of marriage, no lying, no stealing, etc. – there is no reason to go to God and ask Him if we should do any of those things. In fact, asking God’s opinion then is like trying to get Him to change His mind and say that what He really meant to say was that no one should have sex outside marriage, or lie or whatever except you. When you ask for God’s opinion on something to which you already know His views, you are only trying to rationalize your desire to disobey one of God’s clearly stated commands.

So, pray often and pray with all your heart, but don’t use prayer to try to rationalize sin. When God has given a command, obey it.

“If you want to enter life, obey the commandments.” Matthew 19:17b

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to accept your rules and not try to wiggle out of obeying them. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
