Don't Deceive Yourself

Bible Reading: James 1:14-26

Many people say that they are Christians, but they don’t all act like Christians. These Christians forget the words of James 1:22 which says, “Do not merely listen to the word,

and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” Instead, their mouths say, “I’m a Christian,” but their actions don’t prove their faith.

Christian actions can’t save us from our sin, nor can they get us into heaven. Only confessing our sin to God and claiming Jesus as our Lord and Savior can do that.

However, when a person becomes a Christian, his or her life should demonstrate by its actions the faith that the person claims to have.

What kind of actions should be visible in the life of a person who is truly a Christian? What does it look like to see Christianity in action?

Start with the Fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22 and 23: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”

Throw in the words of Paul in Romans 12 and Colossians 3. Add in the words of Timothy in 2 Timothy 2. Then read the books of 1 Peter, James, and 1 John and add the traits and actions you learn about there. Don’t forget Jesus’ teachings in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

I encourage you to read and study these Bible passages then do what they say to do. When you do, people will be able recognize Christianity in action because you will be putting your Christianity into action. Your life will be a living example of what the scripture say.

“As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.” James 2:26

Prayer: Heavenly Father, let my actions please You and clearly demonstrate to others that I am a Christian – that I have the Spirit of Your Son, Jesus in my heart. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
