Bible Reading: Daniel 5:23
In today’s Bible passage, Daniel was talking to King Belshazzar. Daniel told the king that he should have been living a humble life, a life that honored God. Sadly, King Belshazzar
hadn’t done that. In verse 23 Daniel went on to say, “Instead, you have set yourself up against the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life and all your ways.”
King Belshazzar suffered from “Stuff Syndrome.” Things were top priority in his life. God and other people settled into a place of lesser value.
If stuff is of higher priority in your life than God and other people, you are suffering from the “Stuff Syndrome”, too.
You can snuff out “Stuff Syndrome” by asking God to take first priority in your life; then, begin putting God’s command to love other people and put them ahead of yourself into practice. Here are a couple of ideas of ways to do that:
* Donate money to a mission fund.
* Give unneeded clothes and other things away.
* Have a garage sale and donate the proceeds to charity.
* Offer to baby-sit for someone at no charge.
* Go to the park and pick up trash to make the park cleaner for other visitors.
Most importantly, focus on collecting heavenly things, things of eternal value instead of collecting more “stuff.”
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” Matthew 6:19 & 20
Prayer: Heavenly Father, be top priority in my life. Help me to keep You in first place then to put other people ahead of myself. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
