Describing the Indescribable

Bible Reading: Mark 4:30

We all wonder what heaven will be like. What will it look like? What will life there be like?

Jesus’ disciples and the crowds that surrounded Jesus were no different. They, too, wanted to know more about heaven. They often asked Jesus what heaven would be like. On one such occasion, Jesus began His response by asking “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it?” (Mark 4:30)

Jesus tried, while He was on earth, to describe God’s kingdom to those around Him and to us. It must have been a very difficult job. Jesus had to try to describe in human terms something superhuman, something indescribable. He had to find things that we knew and understood to try to compare heaven to. It wasn’t possible for Jesus to fully describe God’s kingdom in human terms, so He used parables to try to explain heaven. He tried to give us glimpses of what God’s kingdom is like by comparing bits and pieces of it with things which are familiar to us.

Although we can’t see the “whole picture.” we can still look forward to an eternity in God’s kingdom, knowing that it will be bigger, better, and more magnificent that any description.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.’” Matthew 25:34

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thinking about Your indescribable kingdom fills me with indescribable joy! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
