Bible Reading: Matthew 2:1-12
“Christmas celebrates the awesome and amazing fact that God is grander, wiser and more mysterious than we could have ever imagined.” – Dan Schaeffer
Matthew 2:10 says, “When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.” This verse describes the reaction of the wisemen when they saw the new star in the sky. This star was a sign that a new king – the long-awaited Messiah – had been born.
Looking at this star must have filled the wisemen with awe and wonder. They must have felt amazed at the beauty of that star. As it glittered in the night sky filled with millions more stars, this star stood out. It was unique, special.
What is even more amazing is the greatness and beauty of the God Who created the stars, including that special star that announced the birth of Jesus, the Promised Savior. This uniqe star is a reminder of the greatness of God, His glory, His mercy, His unconditional love for all of His creations, especially the people He created.
Like that special star, Christmas is a reminder of the grandness, wisdom, and mystery of God. There is so much to God, and to His Son, Jesus, than we can imagine or understand.
Thankfully, God wants us to know Him. That is why Jesus was born on that first Christmas. That is why Jesus died on the cross. That is why Jesus was raised to new life. Everything surrounding Jesus’ birth, including the appearance of that special star, was designed to allow us to catch a glimpse of the greatness, wisdom, and mysterious love of God.
“You alone are the Lord. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.” Nehemiah 9:6
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the glimpse of You greatness that I get each time I look at the stars. Thank You especially for that unique star that You created to announce the birth of Your Son and my Savior. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
