Bible Reading: Matthew 1:23 & Titus 2:13
“If we could condense all the truths of Christmas into only three words, these would be the words: ‘God with us.’ We tend to focus our attention at Christmas on the infancy of
Christ. The greater truth of the holiday is His deity. More astonishing than a baby in the manger is the truth that this promised baby is the omnipotent Creator of the heavens and the earth!” – John MacArthur, Jr.
“God with us.” What a wonderful way to sum up Christmas!
“God with us,” is the most important part of Christmas. Matthew 1:23 says, “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God with us’).” Christmas isn’t simply about a baby in a manger. Jesus – God – came to earth to save us, to free us from slavery to sin. Christmas is about God – Jesus – being born to die on the cross and be raised again to make a way for us to be forgiven of our sins and to receive eternal life.
If Jesus – God – had not come to this earth to be born of a virgin, Christmas would have no meaning. Life would have no meaning. “God with us” give life here on earth meaning. “God with us” gives us hope for the eternal life to come. Because of “God with us,” we can be forgiven of our sins, made clean, pure, and acceptable in God’s sight. Because of “God with us,” we have a way to seek God’s face through prayer, and live in God’s presence forever.
“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” John 17:3
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus – God with us. Thank You for the forgiveness and eternal life that He made possible. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
