Be a Lamp for the Lord

Bible Reading: 1 Peter 1:14-16

The lamps used for light in Bible times were small containers filled with oil. When lit, a single lamp gave off a small glimmer of light, similar to a candle. By itself, a single lamp

would give light only to the area immediately around the person carrying it. The user knew the lamps limits and moved carefully and gently.

Each one of us is to be a lamp for God and God knows our limits. He doesn’t expect us to light a whole country or even to light a town. He only wants us to light the area directly around us so that the people around us can see God and see The Way to him. God will gently move us to the place where we can shine most effectively for Him.

How do we do that? How do we be lights in a dark world? We obey the command found in today’s Bible reading which says, “As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” As we live God’s way, as we follow Jesus’ example, we become lights lighting the path toward Jesus for those around us to see.

I hope that you and I will each be a lamp for the Lord every day, where we live, where we work, and where we play.

“In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

Prayer: Heavenly Father, show me where You want me to shine for

ou. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
