Anger

Bible Verses to Explore: Deuteronomy 29:24-28 & James 1:19-20

Did you know that God became angry? He did – many times. For example, today’s Bible reading tells about a time that God became angry with the people of Israel. The people

of Israel began serving other gods. This made God angry. Deuteronomy 29:28 says, “The LORD became very angry and upset with them. So he took them out of their land. He put them in another land, where they are today.”

If God became angry with the Israelites, does that mean God sinned?

No.

Many people believe that anger is a sin. That isn’t true. Anger is a genuine emotion, just like love. It is not wrong to become angry, but anger can lead to sinful actions. Anger becomes sin when we say or do wrong things because we are angry.

If we say mean things while we are angry, that is sin.

If we are mean to one person because we are angry with another person, that is sin.

If we begin to plan ways to get revenge against the person who made us angry, that is sin.

If we choose to stay angry and refuse to forgive the person who made us angry, that is sin.

We all become angry sometimes. I hope you will keep the words of Ephesians 4:26 & 27 in mind – “‘When you are angry, don’t let that anger make you sin,’ and don’t stay angry all day. Don’t give the devil a way to defeat you.” I also hope you will ask God to help you to behave in the right way the next time you are angry.

Will you please pray with me?

Heavenly Father, help me to react to others in love, not in anger. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
