A FRIEND, IN NEED
by Gayle J. Thorn
Bible Reading: Proverbs 17:17 & Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” That message is echoed in the old saying, “A friend, in need, is a friend in deed.” Both of these
statements teach us that when you need help, a true friend will be there, proving his friendship by taking action to help you.
How can you know if your friend will stand by you when you are “a friend, in need”? How can you know if you are the kind of friend who will be there when your friend is “a friend, in need”?
Friends who help friends in times of need are:
* Honest. They tell it like it is. While they don’t condone wrong behavior, they don’t look to simply place blame either.
* Helpful. They think through situations and offer practical, usable advice. They are willing to look for solutions to problems.
* Hopeful. They sincerely empathize with a hurting friend and are willing to both listen and talk. They offer encouragement, a shoulder to cry on, and a hug when appropriate.
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!” Ecclesiastes 4:9 &10
Prayer: Heavenly Father, You are the perfect friend. Help me to be the best friend that I can be. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
