Cups

Bible Reading: Psalm 116:13

The Bible speaks of different kinds of symbolic cups.

For example, we share the cup of consolation when we grieve with others (Jeremiah 16:7

KJV).

There is also the cup of God’s wrath symbolized the punishment that God pours out on the wicked (Isaiah 51:17).

Then there is Jesus’ cup, which refers to His suffering and death in our place to provide for our salvation by making a way for us to get to heaven (John 18:11).

Our cup is our portion or our part of the life God created (Psalm 16:5).

Finally, in Psalm 116:13, we read about the cup of salvation. This verse says, “I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD.” The cup of salvation is our portion of the salvation that Jesus’ created for us. To “lift up the cup of salvation” means to recognize our need for and dependence upon God. It means that we continually call on God, first to save us from the evils of sin, then to continually call on Him to provide for us and direct us in the way in which He wants us to live. It is an act of honor, worship, and submission to God.

I encourage you to lift up the cup of salvation to God, worshipping and adoring Him saying, “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being” (Revelation 4:11).

“LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure.” Psalm 16:5

PRAYER FOCUS: Heavenly Father, I trust You and depend on You to fill my cup and quench this thirsting in my soul. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
