Do What You Can

Bible Reading: Mark 14:8a

In Mark 14:8a Jesus said, “She did what she could.”

What a simple statement! The woman that Jesus was speaking of when He spoke

these words had done only one very simple act. She had poured perfume on His head.

That may seem to us an odd thing to do, but in those days, people didn’t have our modern methods of preparing a body for burial. Instead, perfume was poured on dead bodies to prepare them for burial.

This woman had somehow known that Jesus was to die soon, so she poured and entire jar of expensive perfume on His head. That was her way of worshipping Jesus, of showing others that she knew that Jesus was God.

The people who watched this scene were shocked. They felt the woman’s act was wasteful, that the perfume should have been sold and the money given to the poor.

Jesus, however, scolded them. He pointed out that she had little that she could do and little to offer. He made them realized that He didn’t expect her – or anyone else – to do great or fancy things for Him. Jesus simply expected her, and them, and us to do what we can for Him.

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31

Prayer: Heavenly Father, accept my humble service. I’ll gladly do for You what I can. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
