The 10 Commandments - A Modern-Day Paraphrase

Updated: Mar 25, 2020

Bible Reading: Exodus 20:1-17

In the New International Version of the Bible, the passage we call “The 10 Commandments” begins like this: “Then God instructed the people as follows…”

Here is my paraphrase of the rest of God’s 10 Commandments:

1. You will not allow music, TV, computers, clothes, or any other thing, activity, or person to be more important in your life than God.

2. You will not spend more of your time, energy, or money to make any other person, activity, or thing more important in your life than God is.

3. You will not use any form of God’s name lightly or as a swear word and you will not make a promise under oath using God’s name and then not keep the promise.

4. You will spend time with God and His family weekly.

5. You will love and respect your parents at all times – even when you disagree with them.

6. You will not kill anyone or even think about killing someone.

7. You will remain loyal and keep your promises.

8. You will respect the property of other people and not take anything that belongs to someone else without permission.

9. You will tell the truth about everyone and everything at all times.

10. You will be satisfied and content with what you own and with the talents and skills God has given to you. You will not spend time wishing you had what belongs to someone else.

Are you obeying all of God’s 10 Commandments?

“If you love me, you will obey what I command.” John 14:15

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to honor You by obeying all of Your commands all of the time. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
