Wednesday at the Well: Psalm 141:1 & 2 - Incense & Prayer

Updated: Mar 25, 2020

Bible Verses to Explore: Psalm 141:1 & 2

Incense is something made from flowers, wood, herbs, spices, and other things that smell good when they are burned. Incense is burned in some religions as a part of their

rituals. Some people burn incense at home because they enjoy the smell.

Did you know that incense has a special meaning in the Bible?

During Old Testament days, the priests burned incense on the Altar of incense in the tabernacle. The smoke from the incense would drift up toward heaven. The smoke from the incense represented the prayers of the people going up to God in heaven. The wonderful smell of the incense reminded the people of Israel that their

prayers were like a wonderful smell to God.

We can read about incense the book of Revelation, too. Revelation 5:8 says, “After the Lamb took the scroll, the four living beings and the 24 elders bowed down before the Lamb. Each one of them had a harp. Also, they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God's holy people.”

Do you burn incense sometimes? The next time you smell some incense burning, take time to pray and imagine your words drifting up to heaven along with the smoke from the incense.

Let’s keep the words of Psalm 141:2 in our minds as we pray together: “Accept my prayer like a gift of burning incense, the words I lift up like an evening sacrifice.”

Heavenly Father, it’s wonderful to imagine our prayers drifting toward You. Thank You for these beautiful verses and their beautiful imagery. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

I hope you will take a bit more time to download the Inductive Study Guide and bask a bit longer in these verses and in some time praying to God and imaging your prayers wafting heavenward.
