Bible Reading: Proverbs 12:22
Proverbs 12:22 says, “The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful.” God delights in a truthful person. God gets as much pleasure from watching us
tell the truth as we get from a swim in a cool pond or pool on a hot summer’s day or a mug of hot chocolate and a roaring fire in a fireplace in the dead of winter.
What an easy way to make God happy! When we tell the truth, our honesty fills God’s heart with pride and joy.
There are two reasons why truthfulness pleases God.
First, Proverbs 11:3 tells us, “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.” Being honest means we are going in the direction that God wants us to go. It means we are growing in our faith.
Second, Ephesians 4:15 says, “…speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.” Jesus is truth (John 14:6). When we are truthful, we are becoming more and more like Jesus.
Thankfully, we don’t have to go it alone. Jesus gave us His Holy Spirit to help us speak the truth in all situations. We need to trust Him, listen for His guidance, and do our part by carefully choosing our words.
“Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.” Psalm 141:3
Prayer: Heavenly Father, guard my mouth. Help me to say only words that are loving, kind, and useful for encouraging others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
