Who's Your Hero?

Updated: Mar 26, 2020

Bible Reading: 2 Kings 2:9

Today’s Bible verse records Elijah’s last words to his assistant, Elisha. This verse reads, “When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Tell me, what can I do for you before I am

taken from you?’ ‘Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,’ Elisha replied.” When Elijah was taken to heaven in a chariot and horses of fire, Elisha didn’t mourn Elijah’s loss. Elisha didn’t fuss about losing his hero. Elisha didn’t sit around looking at photos of Elijah or listening to tapes of Elijah’s greatest sermons. Elisha didn’t spend his time trying to dress like Elijah or re-create Elijah’s actions. Elisha didn’t keep his eyes on a human hero, he pointed his eyes toward what that human hero was looking at. Elisha let his human “hero” – Elijah – point him in the direction of the real “Hero” – God. Then Elisha kept his eyes on that one real hero. On what “hero” are your eyes focused?

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:2 & 3

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Jesus is my hero. Help me keep my eyes on Him. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
