Bible Reading: Matthew 27:14
How do you react when someone ridicules you or puts down your faith in Jesus? Have you ever wondered how Jesus would handle that situation?
Just how did Jesus handle being ridiculed, made fun of, put down, stepped on, and laughed at? Matthew 27:14 says, “But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge— to the great amazement of the governor.” Jesus knew the value of silence.
Silence, in the wake of cruel words, especially those that attack our faith, shows others that we trust God. Refusing to be drawn into a war of words is a silent statement that we know Who is in ultimate control of everything and everyone. By patiently biding our time we show God that we believe Him when He promises to repay those who mistreat us and trust Him to do so when the time is right.
Our silence also allows people to see God through our actions. Our conscious choice to restrain ourselves and leave our persecutors in God’s hands gives other people a glimpse of God’s character. They see a bit of God’s love, patience, and merciful forgiveness through us. Our silence may be the very thing that prompts them to choose Christ as their own Savior.
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven…a time to be silent and a time to speak.” Song of Solomon 3:1 & 7b
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus’ “silent” example. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
