Bible Verse to Explore: 1 Samuel 20:42

I love lists! Today’s Bible verse seemed to cry out t o me to create a list of 10 traits of a true friend as the Bible describes true friendship.

1 Samuel 20:42 says, "Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the Lord, . . ." Jonathon was a true friend to David. He was the kind of friend we should emulate. Below is the Bible's definition of a true friend. The Bible says a true friend:

  1. Is honest and faithful (Proverbs 27:6).

  2. Is truthful and tells it like it is (Proverbs 27:6).

  1. Recognizes his own flaws (Romans 2:1-3).

  2. Overlooks your flaws (Proverbs 17:9).

  3. Is wise (Proverbs 13:20).

  4. Stands by you no matter what (Proverbs 17:17).

  5. Is willing to help you and eager to spend time with you (I Timothy 1:16-18).

  6. Shares all he has and all he knows with you (John 15:12-17).

  7. Will give his life for you (John 15:12-17).

  8. Loves you as much as he loves himself (John 15:12-17).

How do your friends measure up?

How do you measure up?

One last thought…Keep the words of Proverbs 17:17 in mind when you are answering the above questions and studying today’s verse. This verse says, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”

Let’s pray together. Heavenly Father, show us what we need to do to be better friends. In Jesus' name. Amen.
