How to Be Perfect

Updated: Mar 26, 2020

Bible Reading: 1 John 5:18-21

God is the true God. He is perfect and flawless.

Compared to God, life here on earth is a mess. It is ugly, painful, and imperfect,

forever stained by the impurity of sin. We are imperfect people, full of flaws.

However, we can become true, perfect, and flawless, not by anything that we can do ourselves, but by accepting the act of Jesus’ death for our sins and imperfection. 1 John 5:20 says, “We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true - even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.”

When Jesus died on the cross and rose to go to heaven, He made a way for us to become perfect through His perfection. All we have to do is admit that we’ve sinned, believe that he died for us, and accept His perfection as our own. When we do that, we are united with God through the perfection of Jesus.

Then, Jesus will be in us and we will be in Him. Therefore, because Jesus is true, we will be true. Because He is perfect, we will be perfect. Because He is flawless, we will be flawless. God will treat us as if Jesus’ truth, perfection, and flawlessness is ours.

Sadly, even when we’ve done that, life on earth will continue to be imperfect. We will keep making mistakes and wrong choices for as long as we live here on earth, but with Jesus in our lives, we have His promise that we will live in flawless perfection in the next life – in heaven – forever, with God.

“And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all…because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” Hebrews 10:10 & 14

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I want to claim the promise of a future perfect life in heaven with You. Forgive my sins and save me a place in heaven with You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
