Bible Verse to Explore: Romans 8:5
What do you think about? Do you think that what goes on inside your head affects no one except you? Think again. What goes on inside your head eventually comes out of
your mouth as words or is acted out by your body. Proverbs 23:7 says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” (NKJV). Wow! Romans 8:5 tells us that “Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.”
Think about it. First, you think, “Boy, that cake looks good. It’s too bad I’m not hungry.” But, you keep thinking about that cake and pretty soon you’re cutting a big slab
and forking it into your mouth.
If it can happen with something as simple as giving in to unneeded food, it can happen on a bigger scale.
Take hate. I John 3:15 says, “Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer.” Hate is a thought in the mind. When a person thinks about hating someone it is the first step toward murder. First a person thinks hateful, murderous thoughts then the person acts on those thoughts. In God’s eyes, the thought of hating is the same as actually murdering someone.
Are you going to let wrong thoughts lead you to actions you’ll live to regret or are you going to let God take control of your thoughts and think on things that will lead you to godly, loving actions?
Let’s pray, Heavenly Father, take control of our thoughts. Use them to help us to act in ways that please You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Now it’s your opportunity to take another step setting your mind on what the Spirit desires. Download the Inductive Study Guide and do a bit of setting your mind on the words of Romans 8:5.
